About the Area

The early Eagle River Valley was first inhabited by the Utes. These Native American horsemen spent

winters in the mild climate to the west and returned to, in their language, “the shining

mountains”, each summer to hunt mule deer, elk and the great buffalo.

The earliest Anglo-Americans visited the area to trap beavers to supply the fur trade.

Settlers arrived in the early 1880's who took up homesteads in the area (some of the cabins

are still here!), growing hay and raising cattle to feed hungry miners in nearby Red Cliff. In the

1920’s, head lettuce was the crop of choice in Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch. Through the

years area land produced cattle, hay, potatoes, peas, oats and sheep. The Bachelor Gulch

lanterns you see throughout the village represent the original bachelors who lived in the area

and would use the light of the lanterns to guide their way down the mountain for libations and

supplies.

During World War II the United States Army created a training center south of the valley

called Camp Hale where the 10th Mountain Division trained for alpine combat. Made up of

excellent skiers and mountaineers, the 10th fought in mountainous northern Italy.

In 1980, Beaver Creek Ski Resort opened! It hosted the 2015 Alpine World Ski

Championships and is home to Lindsey Vonn, Helmut, and the infamous Iceman and Yogi "the

party animal"!
